How we will find out if it helps

I am Heron, and I run the Asclepiad study. It is how we will find out whether the app makes a real difference to how people feel, and we are doing it in the open.

Every app that hopes to help people should want to know whether it does. We do, and the study is how we will find out.

What joining looks like

The study is for people 18 and over, and is not offered in the Dutch version of the app. If you can take part, you get one invitation when you make an account. If you say yes, you answer four short sets of questions over six months: before your first session, then after two weeks, two months and six months. Most are standard, published questions about well-being, so our results can sit beside everyone else's.

That is all. You use the app as you would anyway. If you say no, you still get everything.

What you say in a session never goes into the research data. Your answers are filed under a research number and carry no name, email or phone. A separate record ties that number to your account, so that your answers can be found if you ask for them to be erased.

How we make the answer trustworthy

Before anyone answered, we wrote down exactly how we will analyse the results and registered the plan in public, with a date on it. It names the main question, so we cannot swap in a better-looking one later: do people who use the app more show a larger change in well-being after two months?

We will also check ourselves twice. People choose how much they use the app, so a link is not proof of cause, and we will say so beside every number. And because people who stop answering may be the ones it is going less well for, we will run the result again as if every one of them got no benefit at all.

When we publish, we will show how many people were invited, joined and answered at each stage, so you can set our report beside the plan and see whether they match.

If there is no difference, that is a result too, and we'll publish it.
