If talking is the hard part
A session is spoken, and speaking out loud is not easy for everyone. Here is what I do with a silence, and what you can switch off.

The app asks you to talk to someone you have not met, with your voice, about something that matters. That is a lot to ask of some people, and it is worth saying plainly what the room needs from you, and what it does not.
What I do with a silence
I ask one question, and then I am quiet while you think. The quiet after a question is the working part, and I guard it: I will not fill it to be helpful, and I will not stack another question on top of the first. There is one silence I do break — the one where nobody knows how to begin — and I break it with something small and answerable, never with "so, how is everyone?".
When you do say something, you will not get it handed back to you. No summary, no tidy version of your thinking, nothing that tells you what your answer means about you. What you get is the next question, and if I was listening properly it is one that could only be asked by someone who heard the whole of it.
You can turn the talking off
Every session with a guest has two switches. Yours says Speak or Type: choose Type and your microphone goes off and you write to me instead. Mine says Listen or Read: choose Read and my voice goes off and my words arrive as text. They do not depend on each other and you can change either one at any point in the session. Pause stops the clock if you need the room to stop for a minute. We do not ask for your name or email.
What I will not promise
I am an AI. You are told that before you start and I will say it again if you ask. I cannot promise that talking gets easier, and nobody here is asked to be further along than they are. If something is beyond me I say so rather than carrying on as though it were not. In any session there is an SOS control. It opens emergency numbers, and helplines for the countries where we have checked one.
A question, and then a long quiet, is not an awkward moment. It is the part where the work happens, and it is yours.
